Locally Published Books by Area Authors Win National Awards

MINERAL POINT—Three Little Creek Press books—47 Strings: Tessa’s Special Code, Super Snacks for Super Kids and Giddyap Tin Lizzie, The Long Road Back to the Plow—have all won prestigious awards.

47 Strings by Becky Carey of Belmont and Super Snacks for Super Kids by Dr. Sarah Fox and Julie Stephenson, both of Mineral Point, won silver medals in their respective categories, Children’s Picture Book and Health and Fitness, at the 2013 Benjamin Franklin Awards. The Benjamin Franklin Awards are a national award sponsored by the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), which received more than 1,300 book submissions this year. Judges include librarians, book critics, retail and wholesale buyers, and other industry experts. The award is one of the highest national honors an independent publisher can receive and was presented May 29 in New York City.

Giddyap Tin Lizzie by Harold (Skip) Thorpe, who grew up in Mineral Point and Barneveld, won a silver medal at the IPPY Awards in the Great Lakes–Best Regional Fiction category. The IPPY awards are intended to bring increased recognition to the thousands of exemplary independent, university and self-published titles produced each year, and reward those who exhibit the courage, innovation and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing. The IPPY’s received 5,200 submissions this year and awarded 382 medals.
