He’s Pete, Jimmy and Danny . . . in love:   Cwirla’s roles in UW-Richland Theatre’s “Almost, Maine”   Love will fill the air when the curtain goes up in the Coppertop Theatre. “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani, UW-Richland Theatre’s spring production, is all about love—love lost, love found, love’s peaks and love’s valleys. Three of the men whose love stories will be told are played by Timothy Cwirla (pronounced swirl-a), a second-year University of Wisconsin-Richland student from Johnson Creek. In “Almost, Maine,” he plays the roles of Pete, Jimmy and Danny. “Each of them is very different,” he said. “Pete, who appears in the introduction, the interlude and the ending,” Cwirla said, “is head-over -heels, in his first romance and he’s nervous.”And then there’s Jimmy. “He’s upbeat,” Cwirla explained, “and his love interest is Sandrine (played by UW-Richland student from Prairie du Chien Beth Govier) . She left me. What happened? He still loves her, is distressed over the way the relationship ended, wants to win her back.”

The play is a series of vignettes, each with a title that could work for a pop or country love song. “My favorite is ‘This Hurts.’ The dialogue is hilarious!” He’s learned to see new aspects of familiar people. One love scene involves a campus staff person and a man who, off-stage, is her husband. “The chemistry between them is already there. I’m learning to see authority figures in a whole new way,” he said. Without giving surprises away, he said, “I’m excited about the set. It’s quite something. Keep in mind that the action all takes place in one night . . . under the Northern Lights.” Three performances of “Almost, Maine” are scheduled–on Friday, March 16 (8pm); Saturday, March 17 (8pm); or Sunday, March 18 (2pm).
